Abstract

The paper, by studying and designing the interactive game about the blue cloth with white patterns peculiar to the ancient town of Fenghuang, west of Hunan Province, attempts to find the new application of the digital media and the motion-sensing technology-based interactive games in the preservation and protection of intangible cultural heritages. Based on the characteristics of various kinds of motion-sensing technology in its application, the paper summarizes the current situation where such technology-based interactive games are involved in preserving and inheriting the intangible cultural heritages. With the case study of the printing and dyeing techniques of Fenghuang blue cloth with white patterns, the game will be designed in four aspects:the framework for the purposes of the game, the narrative of its history, the major contents and the procedures.According to the unique characteristics of this intangible cultural heritage, an interactive game is designed to enable the players to experience the major procedures in printing and dyeing the blue cloth. As an effective tool to realize the interactivity in the game, motion-sensing technology plays an important role in improving the player experience in such cultural heritage games. Players can feel the charms of traditional Chinese culture while playing the interactive games. This design can also be a useful reference for the digital preservation and development of other intangible cultural heritages in China.
