Abstract

This paper aims to explore the process of design-driven function innovation, and use this process to satisfy users' pursuit of different product meanings to enhance the competitiveness of products designed by enterprises.The paper first clarifies the principle, characteristics and basic process of design-driven function innovation. Then the paper summarizes three patterns to unearth product meaning by analyzing the ways of realizing different types of product meaning and the role of product users and application scenarios in unearthing product meaning. According to the characteristics of product function transformation brought about by the changes in product meaning, the paper summarizes the suitable design-driven function innovation technology. Finally, based on the above, the paper proposes a design-driven function innovation process model. The verification of an example proved that the design-driven product function innovation process model can guide designers to carry out the function innovation design in stages, including how to propose new product meaning and how to revise the product function system, which can provide new ideas different from demand-pull and technology-push for product function innovation.
