Abstract

A total of 810 cover images of "China Pictorial" from 1950-2015 were collected as samples for visual analysis. "China Pictorial" was divided into four stages, namely the first stage (1950-1965) of succeeding past and starting future and spreading power, the second stage (1966-1976) of recording history and awakening revolution, the third stage (1977-1998) of carrying out reform and innovation and developing literary genre as well as the fourth stage (1999-2015) of showing the grace of a great nation and moving to the future. The dimensions of photographic image elements, type layout and illustration layout were analyzed by means of image analysis and documentary research. Firstly, the process of social development determines the content of the visual narrative of "China Pictorial". Secondly, the typesetting method helps readers to obtain more information and improves the efficiency of readers to read information. Thirdly, the improvement of technology promotes the style change of image narrative and enhances the dimension of narrative space.
