The work aims to clarify the research development trends of the traditional handicraft and cultural and creative design field, and to strengthen readers' understanding of the crossing field of traditional handicraft and cultural and creative design. Related research literature and cases about traditional handicraft and cultural creative design in recent years were analyzed and sorted out. An overall overview of the design idea, design method, design process and innovative ways of the crossing fields was made. The existing problems and development trends were summarized. The article summarizes the related research in the crossing field of traditional handicraft and cultural and creative design. The field of traditional handicraft and cultural and creative design has several problems, including insufficient research of differentiation and in-depth, lack of composite talents engaged in handicraft and cultural and creative design, lack of theoretical support and data support, lack of the diversified aesthetic standard and value assessment system, and lack of quantitative criteria. The development trend of design research of traditional handicraft and cultural and creative design is to assist design through theories and methods of natural science and technical equipment, conduct design from users' perspective and integrate design ideas.
