Pattern on Roe Deer Robe of the Oroqen People

Abstract

The pattern of the roe deer robe is a significant part of the Oroqen people's traditional clothing. It is the cultural achievements made over thousands of years and valuable cultural heritage witnessing the development of the Oroqen ethnic group. The work aims to have an in-depth discussion on the creation and development of the roe deer robe patterns to provide a basis for contemporary scholars to explore from the cultural perspective the creation activities and evolution of clothing patterns of the nomadic hunting nationalities in the north of China. Literature research and field research were adopted in this study to analyze the robe in detail from the structure, patterns, subject matter, form, and craftsmanship in order to provide a cultural interpretation of their worship of nature, good expectations of life, reflection of cultural symbols, integration of learning from each other and identity of national spirit. From the perspective of design, the pattern of the roe deer robe embodied the superb artistic talent and simple creation ideas of the Oroqen people; from the perspective of culture, it contained their spiritual belief and national identity. Created in the primitive ecological environment of hunting culture, the pattern of the roe deer robe, featured by the unique culture of the Oroqen people, may serve as a model for the exploration of the origin, development and evolution of clothing patterns.
