Abstract

The work aims to investigate how the generation tracking gestures can deferentially enhance the individual wayfinding performance with varying levels of mental rotation abilities, and propose design solutions for optimizing mobile navigation UI interfaces and interactions tailored to diverse user groups. Drawing upon the desktop virtual reality map learning task paradigm, Experiment 1 was conducted to examine wayfinding performance disparities among individuals with distinct mental rotation abilities, both in 2D and 3D map environments. In Experiment 2, an embodied cognition framework and tracking gestures were used to enhance the wayfinding performance of individuals with differing levels of mental rotation abilities within a 3D map context. The results indicated that individuals with lower mental rotation abilities exhibited relatively low wayfinding performance. However, when presented with a 3D map scenario and utilizing tracking gestures, a noticeable improvement in wayfinding performance was observed. For individuals with low mental rotation abilities or for interaction designers, harnessing the potential of tracking gestures within a 3D navigation map context can amplify the interaction between the body, environment, and task, thus leading to improved performance.
