The work aims to explore the application of the elderly-oriented theory based on HCD (Human-centered Design) in product design. The Empathy in HCD was used to observe the elderly to find product pain points in combination with literature reading, statistical analysis and typical user interviews, etc. The Gordon Method and the knowledge of semiotics were used to decompose the problem layer by layer, excavate its essence, and solve the problem in an innovative way with the sustained release technology in materials science. The design of a color-changing capsule package suitable for the elderly won the "Reddot Award". The core of elderly-oriented design is human, which should not only emphasize the premise of human orientation, and but also pay more attention to the special needs of the elderly in terms of safety, usability, and emotions. The solution of product problems can not only stay at the superficial level, but also need to have the ability to see through the appearance to perceive the essence. The intersection and integration between disciplines is conducive to innovative problem solving.
