Impact of Spatial Layout Based on Co-visibility Differences on User Memory Characteristics

Abstract

The work aims to explore the differences in user memory effects related to display content and location in the exhibition space layout design of continuous and discrete pathways categories, and the causes of the differences, so as to contribute to design decisions in fields such as virtual reality space layout and exhibition space design. The spatial layouts of the exhibition space were categorized according to variations in co-visibility and spatial layout continuity. The user touring routes in different exhibition space layouts were observed and the impact of different co-visibility configurations on visitor memory was explored. Through memory tests conducted on different groups of visitors exposed to two distinct co-visibility layout designs, significant associations were found between memory scores for artwork content and memory scores for artwork positioning and the spatial layout design. In a continuous flow layout, differences in co-visibility levels had no significant impact on visitors' memory, but the display content and touring sequence had a noticeable effect on memory. In contrast, in a discrete flow layout, differences in co-visibility levels might affect visitor touring strategies and focal points, and impact the memory of the displayed content. These findings underscore the importance of co-visibility factors in various flow layout designs for museum or art gallery exhibition spaces. This insight can guide future exhibition design decisions.
