Abstract

The work aims to improve the user experience of in-vehicle information system interfaces for elderly drivers. An interface design method of in-vehicle information system for the elderly based on SHERPA (Systematic Human Error Reduction and Prediction Approach) and HEART (Human Error Assessment and Reduction Techniques) was proposed. Initially, a focus group was set up to conduct a SHERPA qualitative analysis of the evaluated products, draw a hierarchical task analysis chart and define error types through the error classification table. Then, HEART was used to quantitatively analyze the types of errors, set error producing conditions, determine the assessed proportion of effect of each condition, and calculate the human error probability. On this basis, the error producing conditions were analyzed and the causes of errors were summarized to improve the design based on error correction measures. Finally, the improved interface was validated. This research methodology can effectively identify error producing conditions significantly related to the in-vehicle information system interface by the elderly, which can help designers identify key areas for interaction design improvement and reduce the error operation of the in-vehicle information system interface by elderly drivers.
