Abstract

The work aims to analyze the foundations of design collaboration under the Participatory Design (PD) in social design, and how these infrastructures should be established. Beginning with a review and analysis of the concept of infrastructures, a thorough literature search was conducted in databases (Scopus, Web of Science, CNKI, and five key journals in design studies), focusing on research related to PD infrastructures. The literature obtained was summarized and categorized based on the theme of "Design-oriented Infrastructures." The origin of the concept of infrastructures in PD and its emergence in design studies research were traced. Research on PD infrastructures within the context of social design was summarized. A Design-oriented Infrastructures in Participatory Design (D-OIPD) framework was proposed, which was applicable for understanding research of PD infrastructures in social design contexts. The paper also analyzed infrastructures challenges in design collaboration within social design, summarized relevant research, and proposed future research topics. In conclusion, understanding infrastructures can assist designers in better executing social design projects. The concept also expands the scope of PD research within the context of social design.
