Abstract

The work aims to provide an effective tool for guiding design practices through in-depth research and analysis of product metonymy. Drawing upon concepts from cognitive linguistics, the analysis categorized product metonymy based on the cognitive mechanisms involved and the ways in which products were holistically referenced. During the research process, the author identified a particular type of product metonymy that formed its holistic reference through functional transformation, leading to the classification of metonymy into two types:the traditional "environment-to-holistic reference" product metonymy which formed an identification of the holistic reference through the context in which it was used, and the special "holistic reference-to-environment" product metonymy which adapted to its use environment through the transformation of its holistic reference to form the cognition of the whole product. By employing different metaphorical strategies, designers can highlight the functional characteristics of products under various usage scenarios, and identify product reference through "experiential gestalt".
