Abstract

The work aims to analyze the layout of woodblock printed scriptures from the Dunhuang caves and explore their intrinsic design paradigms based on a grid system approach, to provide methodological references for contemporary design practice and to facilitate the modern transformation of Dunhuang design thinking in practice. With the grid system of the Dunhuang caves as the basis for the construction of the layout, quantitative analysis, qualitative analysis, and documentary research were combined to analyze the three latitudes of typeface, style, and typography under the constraints of the grid, and to summarize and organize the basic features of the Dunhuang caves scripture paradigm. Through a detailed analysis of the sample layout, the paradigm was summarized into four main design paradigms:layout paradigm, graphics and text paradigm, font paradigm and visual paradigm, and the effectiveness and universality of these paradigms were verified in the example design. This study conducts an in-depth analysis of the woodblock printing part of the Dunhuang posthumous documents, clarifies the evolution process of the woodblock printing layout design used for religious communication in the Dunhuang caves from the Tang Dynasty to the Yuan Dynasty, summarizes the basic design paradigm, and proposes a corresponding contemporary design framework. Through feedback based on design practice, it promotes the integration of Dunhuang aesthetics and contemporary design, provides a beneficial path for the inheritance and dissemination of traditional culture, and offers theoretical and practical support for Dunhuang design ideas to revitalize in the contemporary era.
