Serialization Design of Product Form Based on Prototype Theory and Topology

Abstract

The work aims to develop a method for serialization design of product forms from the perspective of prototype forms, based on topological property and topological deformation by means of the prototype theory and the related methods of topology to solve the problems of "lack of popular style", "blurring of the main and secondary forms" and "form discontinuity of serialization" in the serialization design of product forms. Firstly, the representative samples of target products with popular style imagery were obtained by semantic differentials combined with expert interviews; Secondly, the main and secondary form characteristics of the representative samples were distinguished through the topological quantitative analysis method; Thirdly, a design form analysis was combined with a similarity result dispersion analysis to extract form prototypes; Finally, according to the main and secondary form characteristics, combined with the needs of popular styles, different topological deformation rules were applied to serialize and innovate the design of product form prototypes. A case study of the proposed method was conducted with the front face of a tractor as the verification example. The result showed that, it can give serialization design solutions a unique pop style and a recognizable and continuous appearance. In the serialization design of product form, the problem of product serialization design is solved by mining form prototypes that satisfy users' popular style needs, obtaining recognizable characteristics of serialized products, and then combining the topological deformation methods, which solve practical problem of product serialization design and provide an effective reference idea and design method for product form serialization.
