Abstract

Public design of nuclear power plants represents a critical breakthrough for the advancement of the nuclear power industry across various countries. However, relevant research, both in China and abroad, remains insufficient. The work aims to propose a public and sensory design method tailored to China's new generation of nuclear power plant, "Hualong One", with the goal of enhancing public perception and acceptance of nuclear power. The cognitive challenges faced by the public regarding nuclear power plants were studied. By integrating international art and design cases, a nuclear sensory design framework based on a three-tier model of "instinct-behavior-reflection" was constructed. Through data collection and experimental approaches, the perceptible space and brand system of "Hualong One" were designed. The findings demonstrated that the sensory design could multidimensionally enhance the perception of "Hualong One" in both spatial and branding dimensions, offering the public a tangible experience of invisible radiation and nuclear power plants. This study provides novel strategies and insights for designing initiatives to promote public acceptance of nuclear energy development, thereby contributing to the realization of carbon neutrality goals.
