Age-friendly Smart Home Product Design Based on Embodied Cognition Theory

Abstract

Specific to the embodied cognitive impairments faced by elderly users in using smart home products, the work aims to propose an optimized design strategy for age-friendly smart home products based on their cognitive characteristics and usage requirements, so as to improve the quality of life of the elderly group. Based on the embodied cognition theory and combined with Maslow's hierarchy of needs model, the focus was placed on how the interaction between the body and the environment met the needs at different levels. Through this framework, the cognitive characteristics and behavioral needs of elderly users in the use of smart homes were analyzed. Secondly, the user journey map was used to depict user behavior, identify pain points and opportunity points, and clarify optimization requirements. Based on these requirements, the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) was adopted for weighting and ranking to ensure that the priorities of each requirement were reasonably reflected, providing a clear direction for the design. Then, the functional implementation was simplified in combination with the black box model, and the requirements were directly corresponding to the product functions. Ultimately, based on the optimized design plan, product design and application verification were carried out to precisely meet the personalized needs of elderly users. Through the integration of cross-theoretical models from the perspective of embodied cognition, the core needs of elderly users are clarified and smart home products that met the needs are designed. The design of smart fans verifies the effectiveness and application prospects of the embodied cognitive-driven smart home design strategy in aging-friendly design.
