Smart Furniture Design Methods Based on Life Cycle Concept

Abstract

Smart furniture is an essential component of smart home systems. To meet the requirements of smart home systems and enhance the market competitiveness of smart furniture, the work aims to propose a design method based on the life cycle theory for smart furniture. Firstly, the design requirement data for various life cycle stages of smart furniture were collected by the Delphi method and questionnaire surveys. The AHP model was then applied to calculate weight coefficients at each level and prioritize the coefficients. Secondly, the QFD theory was employed to systematically translate these requirements into specific quality characteristics and determine their relative significance through a series of calculations. Finally, based on the importance results, a design practice was conducted with a smart bedside table as an example. The SOR theory was employed to evaluate the design practice and verify the scientific nature of the design process. The reference indicators for smart furniture design prioritized basic performance, smooth operation without lag, user-friendly interaction, and environmentally friendly materials. Secondary considerations included sound, light and electrical safety, innovative smart technologies and information security. Lastly, the compatibility with other devices, remote maintenance services and misoperation prevention settings were considered. Adopting the product life cycle concept enhances the scientific and comprehensive nature of smart furniture design, providing a new perspective for designing similar products.
