Abstract

The work aims to explore narrative methods for urban furniture within the context of urban renewal, providing new ideas for urban furniture design. The narratology theory was applied to study the urban furniture design. Firstly, the concept of urban furniture was redefined from a narratological perspective and the significant roles of street furniture with narrative characteristics in deepening the design connotation, remolding the spirit of place, and promoting public social participation and social interaction were analyzed. Secondly, the narrative methods of urban furniture were analyzed and summarized as "form-driven narration", "event-driven narration", and "context-driven narration". Finally, the narrative strategies of urban furniture at different levels in urban space were summarized, and the specific application of three narrative methods were expounded through specific cases. Urban furniture today is undergoing transformation from being purely functional to culturally significant. The intervention of narratology theory transforms urban furniture from a mere functional object into a narrative medium carrying urban history, memory, and emotion. Through narrative means, it shapes the city into a space filled with stories and emotional memories.
