Research Progress and Trend Analysis of Food Packaging Design

Abstract

The work aims to analyze the current state, key trends, and future directions of researches in the field of food packaging design, to provide reference for relevant practitioners. CiteSpace was utilized to conduct a visual analysis and review based on data from core journals in the CNKI and Web of Science databases between 2014 and 2023 by examining publication volume, citation networks, core authorship, institutional contributions, key word co-occurrence, and research progress. Internationally, the publication volume steadily increased, with significant contributions and strong collaboration from Europe and North America. In contrast, China's output was relatively limited, with less global impact. China's research primarily focused on packaging design's cultural expression, materials and technology, and user experience, while international studies emphasized consumer behavior, health, new materials, and information dissemination. In China, the research evolved from meeting basic needs and functional design to exploring cultural expression, user experience, and educational practice. Internationally, early research centered on consumer behavior and health shifted toward in-depth exploration of eco-friendly materials and packaging functionality. Overall, the research on food packaging design is active internationally, and China needs to strengthen collaboration and innovation. Future research trends are expected to focus on smart packaging, sustainable materials, and consumer behavior, which is critical to driving innovation and sustainability in the field of food packaging design.
