Application of Teochew Woodcarving Cultural and Creative Product Design Based on RMP Theory

Abstract

In response to the challenges faced by the intangible cultural heritage of Guangdong Teochew Woodcarving in its contemporary transmission and market-oriented transformation, the work aims to explore innovative pathways for the design of cultural and creative products based on the "Resources-Market-Products" analytical framework derived from RMP Theory, so as to achieve a dynamic inheritance of traditional craftsmanship that aligns precisely with modern consumption demands. First, the KJ method was employed to consolidate the demands for Teochew Woodcarving cultural and creative products. The RMP Theory was then used to systematically deconstruct the resource attributes, market positioning, and design pain points of Teochew Woodcarving and establish a Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) evaluation model and the entropy-weighted Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method was utilized to analyze and filter design elements. Subsequently, based on the weighted rankings, a balance between traditional aesthetics and modern practical value was achieved, resulting in an innovative design proposal for Teochew Woodcarving cultural and creative products. Finally, the System Usability Scale (SUS) was employed to evaluate the proposed design solutions. Preliminary findings validated the scientific feasibility of deriving cultural and creative designs for Teochew Woodcarving through the frameworks of RMP Theory and FAHP-entropy-weighted TOPSIS, providing a reference point for the inheritance and development of Teochew Woodcarving culture. With Teochew Woodcarving culture as a case study, this research offers new feasible solutions for the innovative design of cultural and creative products in areas such as resource value reconstruction, market demand adaptation, and product form iteration. It also provides insights for the cultural and creative development and branding operations of similar intangible cultural heritage projects, with potential for further exploration of the integration of traditional cultural product technologies in the contexts of intelligence and globalization.
