Construction and Design of IPs in Port Cities by Socially Engaged Art

Abstract

The work aims to explore strategies and practices of socially engaged art in construction and design of IPs in port cities to enhance public engagement in urban spiritual culture construction. Based on socially engaged art mechanisms and the Kano model, intervention demands for socially engaged art in port cities were analyzed and urban IP construction paths through multi-type participants, multi-level structures, and multi-directional visual imagery were refined. By integrating theories of communicable cities, cross-media narrative, and collective memory, three-dimensional design strategies were proposed, encompassing multi-construction of port physical space, participatory perception of spiritual space, and visual translation of humanistic space. With Qinhuangdao's Xigang Garden IP Project as a case study, these strategies were validated. Through participatory fieldwork, collaborative frameworks, goal-setting, and visual design, the effectiveness of urban IP construction and design application was demonstrated. Socially engaged art intervention in the construction and design of IPs in port cities provides reference significance for effectively enhancing the attractiveness of port cities and promoting their cultural innovation and development, while also facilitating broader public engagement in urban cultural development.
