Application of the Mortise and Tenon Structure in New Chinese-style Furniture Design

Abstract

The work aims to explore modern application pathways of the mortise and tenon structure in new Chinese-style furniture design and propose feasible design strategies that integrate traditional craftsmanship with contemporary manufacturing. Through literature review and case analysis, the historical advantages and current challenges of the mortise and tenon structure were systematically summarized. Based on market-research data and representative design cases, four strategies were proposed: material optimization, process simplification, structural modularization, and digital integration. The mortise and tenon structure offers structural stability, environmental benefits, and cultural symbolism. The modern design approaches can significantly enhance its adaptability and market competitiveness in new Chinese-style furniture. By introducing novel design concepts at the initial design stage, such as advanced materials, intelligent manufacturing, and traditional cultural elements, the unique characteristics and strengths of the mortise and tenon structure can be fully realized, endowing new Chinese-style furniture with both traditional features and contemporary aesthetics.
