Chinese-style Shape Design of Large Cruise Ships Based on Shape Grammar

Abstract

Considering the current trend where the shape design of large cruise ships predominantly follows Western design philosophies and lacks Chinese cultural elements, the work aims to explore a Chinese-style shape design approach for large cruise ships to cater to the cultural preferences and aesthetic requirements of Chinese tourists. Firstly, the hierarchical shape features of large cruise ships were systematically analyzed from a holistic to a detailed perspective. Subsequently, the applicability and design process of the shape grammar in the shape design context of large cruise ships were rigorously examined. Finally, the shape grammar was employed to deduce and integrate Chinese-style elements across various structural levels of large cruise ships, thereby implementing Chinese-inspired shape design practices in large cruise ship construction. By applying shape grammar rules, the intricate traditional image was distilled into abstract geometric elements, from which multiple configuration schemes for distinct primary feature components were derived. Through a process of selection and integration, the final comprehensive Chinese-style shape design scheme for large cruise ships was obtained. Through the design practice, the feasibility of applying traditional cultural elements to the shape design of large cruise ships is verified, which provides a new idea for the innovative Chinese-style design of large cruise ships.
