Age-friendly Color Design of Automotive Central Control Interfaces Based on Natural Color System

Abstract

The work aims to propose a color adaptation design method for automotive central control interfaces based on the Natural Color System (NCS), the Kansei image theory and the biophilic theory, to meet the visual characteristics, physiological traits and psychological and cultural needs of elderly users and enhance driving safety and user comfort for elderly users. Firstly, the applicability of the NCS color system, Kansei imagery, and biophilia theory in color design was analyzed, and the attention priorities of elderly users to the functional modules of the automotive central control interface were identified. The BYD DiLink vehicle system interface was used as the design medium for improvements, with color samples selected through a combination of semantic differential methods and Kansei cognitive experiments. Factor analysis was employed to quantitatively assess the Kansei imagery characteristics of elderly users towards color, extracting their perceptual preferences. The study demonstrated that elderly users showed a marked preference for warm colors with high brightness and medium saturation, with greater acceptance for orange, yellow, and green, and further identified representative color codes. By integrating interface visual, layout, and interaction design strategies, two mode schemes for day and night were developed. Usability perception verification provides a theoretical basis and practical reference for age-friendly color design research of automotive central control interfaces.
