Design of Upper Limb Prosthetic Products for Adolescents from the Perspective of Stigma

Abstract

In response to the current issue that upper limb prosthetic products have long emphasized functionality while neglecting users' psychological experiences, the work aims to explore the design factors influencing the stigma of upper limb amputee adolescents and propose an upper limb prosthesis design solution to reduce stigma, thereby alleviating users' psychological stress during use and improving the life quality of amputee adolescents. Firstly, the grounded theory was employed to construct a model of the factors influencing the stigma of upper limb amputee adolescents. Then, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used to transform these factors into design elements and conduct design. Finally, the Fuzzy Comprehensive Evaluation (FCE) method was utilized to conduct multi-index systematic evaluation and optimization of the design solution. Four core design factors influencing user stigma were identified, including appearance and shape design, functional design, experiential design, and universal design. Based on these factors, three upper limb prosthesis design solutions with low-stigma features were developed. The fuzzy evaluation results indicated that all three solutions achieved satisfactory levels, with the Solution III demonstrating particularly distinctive characteristics. The proposed prosthetic product design can effectively address the stigma faced by adolescents with upper limb deficiencies, demonstrating certain application value. The research methodology integrating "grounded theory-AHP-FCE" systematically translates users' psychological needs into design elements, providing an effective research approach and theoretical reference for related design fields.
