Design and Application of Tang Dynasty's Ribbon-bearing Bird Patterns from the Perspective of Cultural Genes

Abstract

The work aims to investigate the structural characteristics, cultural connotations, and intercultural significance of Ribbon-bearing Bird patterns in the Tang Dynasty through the lens of the cultural gene theory, to reveal its mediating role in Silk Road cultural exchanges while exploring its contemporary design applications. Employing the iconographic methodology, it systematically traced the evolutionary lineage of Ribbon-bearing Bird patterns from Sasanian Persia through Sogdian culture to Tang China, elucidating morphological transformation patterns via cross-cultural visual comparisons. A multidisciplinary collaborative research framework was then applied to construct a cultural gene translation model, culminating in information visualization design and cultural-creative product transformation practices that enabled modern reinterpretation and application of these patterns. Findings demonstrated that Ribbon-Bearing Bird patterns underwent multilayered cultural adaptations across regions, manifesting diverse symbolic functions while reflecting Tang artisans' localized reinterpretation of exotic elements. The culturally-gene-inspired product series successfully transposed traditional visual elements into contemporary media combining aesthetic appeal with cultural dissemination capacities. This research posits that the study on Ribbon-bearing Bird patterns materializes the decoding of Silk Road cultural syncretism, with its visual translation mechanism of cultural genes establishing a methodological paradigm for innovating traditional patterns.
