Product Packaging Design Based on the Sustainable Development Concept

Abstract

The rapid social progress has brought people more and more high-quality life, but also caused a variety of negative effects, such as resource depletion, environmental pollution, white pollution, etc. The work aims to explore product packaging design based on the concept of sustainable development to alleviate environmental pollution caused by packaging by optimizing packaging design concepts and promoting sustainable development of packaging design. Through theoretical research, case study methods, and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), with food packaging as an example, the environmental impact of each stage was quantitatively analyzed from raw material acquisition to waste disposal. The analytical framework was structured around three dimensions of "Material, Structure, Function" and combined with quantitative and qualitative data for a comprehensive assessment. The problems in product packaging were analyzed and strategies for product packaging design were explored based on the concept of sustainable development. There are many problems in modern product packaging design, such as resource waste caused by over-packaging, environmental pollution caused by independent packaging, and safety problems caused by non-environmental packaging materials. Therefore, product packaging design should integrate the concept of sustainable development into packaging function design. Systematic strategies based on the circular economy "5R principle" (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rethink, Repair) can effectively enhance the environmental friendliness and resource utilization rate of packaging. Empowerment by digital technology and innovation in service models have become important pathways to promote closed-loop cycling of packaging systems. Only in this way can the environmental problems caused by packaging be alleviated to the greatest extent. Future research should integrate intelligent and biodegradable materials to promote closed-loop packaging systems.
