Design and Evaluation of Designer Toys under Decoupling of Jingchu Culture

Abstract

The work aims to investigate modular design mechanisms that balance profound cultural expression with industrial efficiency by drawing on the commercial logic of market-leading designer toys, so as to address the challenges of protracted design cycles, prohibitive molding costs, and low component commonality in Jingchu cultural and creative toys.. By integrating the "decoupling" theory from systems engineering, a framework for "functional-structural and cultural-visual decoupling" was proposed. The methodology consists of three core strategies: first, disrupting the traditional coupling of forms and functions by bifurcating the designer toys into a "System Frozen Layer" for kinematic logic and a "System Variable Layer" for Jingchu visual semantics; second, establishing architecture-level physical interface protocols and extracting the characteristics of Jingchu artifacts to establish a parametric library of surface components; and third, implementing Design for Manufacturing (DFM) specifications to optimize engineering adaptation for complex motifs during injection molding. A dual assembly system based on this decoupled architecture was developed. Comparative analysis demonstrated that this approach enabled the reuse of internal skeletons across different models, significantly increasing component commonality while reducing total mold requirements and sunk costs. This systematic decoupling overcomes the "one mold per product" manufacturing barrier prevalent in the designer toy industry. The model enhances R&D efficiency and achieves a strategic equilibrium between cultural integrity, playability, and industrial economics, providing a viable engineering pathway for the mass production of regional culture-themed designer toys.
