Construction and Application of an INPD-AHP-AD Model for the Age-friendly Design Path of the Outdoor Space Walker

Abstract

To address the functional deficiencies in the age-friendly design of current public fitness equipment, the work aims to propose a systematic design framework targeting elderly users, to improve exercise safety and usability in community public spaces. With the outdoor space walker as the research object, a product development model integrating INPD (Integrated New Product Development), AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process), and AD (Axiomatic Design) was constructed. Firstly, product opportunities were identified through SET (Social, Economic, and Technological) factor analysis to clarify actual user pain points. Then, AHP was used to build a hierarchical structure of user needs, and expert scoring was applied to determine the weight of key indicators, highlighting core design directions such as anti-slip protection, simplified operation, boarding assistance, and interactive prompts. Subsequently, AD theory was employed to map the correlation among "user needs-functional requirements-design parameters", and a design matrix was constructed to verify the independence and rationality of the scheme. Based on the matrix results, the product scheme was designed and an optimized product concept and 3D model were developed. The proposed design scheme showed good performance in safety, operability, and functional integration. User feedback confirmed significant improvements in age-friendly usability. The INPD-AHP-AD integrated design method established in this work offers theoretical and methodological support for the age-friendly development of similar public fitness products and demonstrates potential for broader application.
