Design of Elderly-friendly Intelligent Ceramic Tableware

Abstract

The work aims to focus on elderly-friendly ceramic tableware, and integrate lightweight intelligent home technology with elderly-friendly design theories to explore a product design path featuring safety, usability, humanity, and intelligence based on the upgrading requirements of elderly-friendly intelligent products in the context of population aging, so as address the deficiencies of traditional ceramic tableware in adapting to the physiological function degradation and psychological need changes of the elderly. First, through a literature review, relevant concepts of elderly-friendly design research were sorted out, and the four design principles of "safety first, appropriate intelligence, humanistic adaptation, and craft inheritance" were strictly followed. Subsequently, empirical surveys and in-depth user interviews were conducted to systematically analyze the dietary behavioral characteristics of the elderly, the practical pain points in the use of ceramic tableware, and the potential needs for intelligent functions. Based on the Kano model, need classification and priority ranking were further completed, and a design path of "need analysis-technology selection-scheme design" was constructed. Five core categories of tableware, including bowls, plates, cups, spoons, and chopsticks, were selected, with adaptive functions such as temperature sensing, anti-fall warning, anti-slip and anti-shake, and dietary reminders integrated into the design. The structural design, intelligent module integration, and appearance optimization of elderly-friendly and intelligent ceramic tableware were successfully accomplished, and sample fabrication was realized by integrating traditional ceramic craftsmanship. The research findings demonstrate that intelligently adaptive technologies can effectively enhance the elderly-friendly performance of ceramic tableware. The constructed design path is capable of providing theoretical support and practical reference for the elderly-friendly intelligent innovation of ceramic tableware, thereby promoting the cross-border integration between the traditional ceramic industry and the elderly-friendly intelligent home sector.
