Abstract

The work aims to investigate the role of different voice prompt styles in the interaction of intelligent cockpits, analyze their differentiated impacts on the subjective experience and behavioral performance of drivers through the process of emotion perception and cognitive load (CL) regulation, and provide references for the human-computer interaction (HCI) design of automated driving (AD). A within-subjects experiment was conducted with 43 licensed college student drivers who experienced three types of voice prompts, command, cooperative, and polite. The effects of different prompt styles were compared and analyzed by combining takeover performance, electroencephalogram (EEG), physiological and subjective scales. The results revealed that different prompt styles had significant impacts on drivers' takeover performance and emotional experience. Command-style prompts significantly shortened takeover time but increased cognitive workload and reduced emotional valence; cooperative-style prompts enhanced emotional comfort and perceived usability but led to longer response times; and polite-style prompts reduced subjective workload and improved acceptance, though they showed lower task execution efficiency. Overall, voice prompt styles demonstrated distinct advantages across takeover security and the interactive experience. These findings highlight the importance of tailoring voice prompt strategies in intelligent cockpit design to balance safety and user experience (UX) in automated driving and enhance the applicability and humanization level of the automated driving interaction system.
