Translation and Application of Cultural Genes from the Huitong Section of the Grand Canal in Yacht Exterior Design

Abstract

The work aims to explore the visual translation of cultural genes from the Huitong Section of the Grand Canal in yacht exterior design, so as to promote the contemporary expression of regional culture in the design of waterborne vehicles and enhance cultural communication capacity as well as tourist experience. With the cultural background of the Grand Canal as the entry point, the historical context and cultural composition of the Huitong Section were sorted out to construct a cultural gene map, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was adopted to screen key cultural factors, and core symbols were extracted from three dimensions including shape, decoration and color to form a visual translation path. Through design practice, cultural elements were integrated into the modeling of yachts to realize the transformation from cultural information to visual language. Three key cultural gene types were identified, including architectural forms, local production crafts, and religious architectural elements. A visually symbolic system with distinctive regional recognition was constructed, and a complete set of yacht exterior schemes integrated with cultural imagery was finalized. The proposed visual translation method is feasible and innovative in enhancing the cultural attributes of yachts. It provides theoretical references and practical approaches for the cultural design of waterborne vehicles, and bears positive significance for the dissemination of regional culture and the integration of culture and tourism.
