Abstract

The work aims to propose digital design strategies based on the situated cognition theory to enhance the cognitive efficiency and emotional connection with the ICH culture in digital media environments, so as to address the issues of cognitive discontinuity and weakened emotional connection in the dissemination of Xuan paper intangible cultural heritage (ICH). From the perspective of situated cognition, the constitutive elements of Xuan paper ICH were deconstructed. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) was employed to quantify user need weights. A "User Needs-Design Orientations" mapping matrix was constructed, leading to the formulation of situated cognition-driven digital design strategies for ICH. An AR experience workshop prototype for Xuan paper craftsmanship was developed. A pre-post test experiment combining subjective scales and objective performance metrics validated the strategy's effectiveness in reducing cognitive load and strengthening cultural identity. Introducing the situated cognition theory and AHP into the research on digital communication design for ICH can reshape the narrative pathways of ICH culture and reduce users' cognitive load. Furthermore, integrating augmented reality technology enhances the "visibility" of ICH culture. This approach provides a transferable and practically effective pathway for the digital living inheritance of other skill-based intangible cultural heritages.
