Design of Ruichang Bamboo Weaving Patterns in New Chinese-style Screens Based on Kansei Engineering

Abstract

To explore the modern design path of Ruichang bamboo weaving patterns in new Chinese-style screens, the work aims to integrate Kansei engineering, Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process and style transfer technology to construct an innovative design framework of "perceptual demand-intelligent generation - multi-criterion decision-making". Firstly, based on the Kansei engineering and through the semantic difference method (SD method) questionnaire and user interviews, the users' perceptual images to the screen's shape, patterns, and materials were collected systematically, and a database of users' perceptual demands was constructed. Secondly, the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) was applied to construct a mapping model between perceptual images and user demands. Experts and target users were invited to conduct a fuzzy comprehensive evaluation of the generated schemes to screen out the optimal design scheme. Finally, by applying the style transfer technique, the perceptual vocabulary after clustering of the core pattern features of Ruichang bamboo weaving was transferred and adapted to the preset basic framework of the new Chinese-style screen, generating a multi- pattern design prototype. By extracting users' perceptual images through the semantic difference method, constructing an evaluation system in combination with FAHP, and achieving the transfer of pattern styles with the help of CycleGAN, a new Chinese-style screen scheme that combines traditional aesthetics with modern functions is ultimately generated, providing a technical paradigm for the dynamic inheritance of bamboo weaving intangible cultural heritage.
