Research on Digital Multisensory Experience Design of Huizhou Woodcarving "Hundred Flowers and Hundred Vases"

Abstract

The work aims to explore modern transformation pathways for intangible cultural heritage through digital innovation and multisensory experience design to address the preservation challenges and limited dissemination effectiveness of the Huizhou wood carving "Hundred Flowers and Hundred Vases". Based on a multisensory fusion experience design philosophy, digital technologies such as 3D scanning, generative AI, and haptic feedback were integrated to construct a digital preservation and interactive system for the "Hundred Flowers and Hundred Vases" pattern. Simultaneously, a multi-channel dissemination approach combining online gamified storytelling with offline AR cultural and creative products was adopted to achieve innovative expression and immersive experiences of traditional cultural symbolism. A digital multisensory experience system for the "Hundred Flowers in Hundred Vases" pattern was developed and its effectiveness was validated through participant experiments. Experimental data revealed that the experimental group, which underwent a full-chain immersive experience, significantly outperformed the static picture control group in metrics such as cultural knowledge acquisition, emotional engagement, and knowledge retention, confirming the advantages of multi-tiered integrated experience design in deepening cultural understanding and strengthening emotional connections. In summary, digital technology effectively addresses the dual challenges of preserving wooden carvings while overcoming superficial dissemination. Diverse experiential design significantly enhances audience cultural cognition and emotional resonance. The proposed "technology-empowered, cultural translation, user participation" experiential design model provides robust support for the living inheritance of Huizhou wood carvings. Simultaneously, it offers theoretical reference and practical paradigms for research on digital preservation and innovative cultural dissemination of intangible cultural heritage.
