Cultural Gene Extraction and Design Transformation of Openwork Decoration on Gold and Silver Vessels from the Liao Dynasty

Abstract

The work aims to extract the cultural genes embedded in the openwork decoration of gold and silver vessels from the Liao Dynasty, and explore feasible approaches for applying these elements in cultural and creative product design, to promote the inheritance and innovation of traditional decorative arts within modern design practices, boost design transformation and enhance cultural identity. Based on cultural gene theory, cultural factors such as form, layout, and motifs of the openwork decoration on gold and silver vessels from the Liao Dynasty were extracted, and a corresponding cultural gene map was constructed. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and the Fuzzy Comprehensive Evaluation (FCE) model were employed to determine the weights of these factors and screen the core design elements. According to the weight evaluation results, six factors, including ruyi-shaped contours, multi-layer and multi-point layouts, dragon medallion patterns, surface decorative techniques, auspicious symbolism, and cross-cultural influences, showed the highest weights in their respective layers, making them the preferred elements in the design translation process. Grounded in cultural gene theory, this work systematically analyzes, extracts, and creatively transforms the design characteristics and cultural connotations of openwork decoration on gold and silver vessels from the Liao Dynasty and further explores the translation path of traditional cultural elements in contemporary design contexts, thereby expanding the theoretical perspective and practical space for the sustainable inheritance and innovative development of traditional cultural resources.
