Abstract

The work aims to design and develop a virtual reality farming experience system "Digital Farming Fun Illustrated" based on the embodied cognition theory, and with the focus on three key dimensions of bodily involvement, embodiment, and environmental embeddedness, to address the shallow understanding and limited experiential engagement that often result from the lack of bodily participation in the transmission of farming culture. Through text analysis and field research, clues of rice cultivation processes, agricultural actions and situations were extracted. On this basis, VR experience of three agricultural seasons—spring plowing, summer weeding, and autumn harvesting were constructed to enable embodied interaction through key farming activities such as rice transplanting, weeding, and harvesting, while also providing contextualized explanations of traditional tools. Using a combination of controlled experiments and interviews, the study compared a VR embodied-interaction group with a paper-based learning group in terms of cultural understanding and quality of experience. The results showed that the VR group achieved higher accuracy in tests of farming culture understanding than the paper-based group, particularly in reasoning about the logic of farming actions and labor processes. In terms of experience quality, the VR group also reported greater immersion and more positive emotions, without experiencing additional cognitive burden. Interviews further revealed that goal-driven tasks, action feedback, and environmental cues together formed the mechanism through which cognition was enhanced. Overall, the findings suggest that VR experiences grounded in embodied cognition can effectively promote deeper understanding of farming culture and improve experience quality, offering a practical design pathway for the digital preservation and transmission of agricultural heritage.
