Application of Mongolian Traditional Pattern "He·Ugulaji"

Abstract

The traditional Mongolian "He·Ugulaji" pattern is an important visual symbol of the nomadic culture of the northern grasslands. The work aims to examine its application principles in traditional clothing, artifacts, and architectural spaces, clarify the relationships among form, materials, functions, and cultural meanings, and provide a theoretical basis for its transformation into contemporary design. The traditional applications of the "He·Ugulaji" pattern and the principles underlying them were systematically analyzed from three perspectives: form principles, material and decorative characteristics, and ornamental functions. On this basis, these traditional principles were translated into contemporary design strategies through form-adaptive design, thereby establishing a viable approach to the inheritance and innovative application of the pattern. The study identified the application principles of the "He·Ugulaji" pattern across different traditional contexts and extracted key design elements concerning formal characteristics, material use, color preferences, and functional attributes, thus providing a theoretical foundation for its contemporary application and cultural continuity. In conclusion, form-adaptive design demonstrates the feasibility of translating traditional Mongolian patterns into contemporary design contexts. The traditional applications of the "He·Ugulaji" pattern offer valuable references for modern design innovation and provide a culturally grounded and practically applicable approach to integrating the pattern into contemporary life, thereby facilitating the continued transmission of the cultural meanings embedded in China's fine traditional culture.
