Design of a Digital Teaching System for Intangible Cultural Heritage in Higher Education Based on Visual Grammar and Lightweight Augmented Reality

Abstract

The work aims to propose a lightweight augmented reality (AR) teaching system for colleges and universities based on the visual grammar theory, explore how intangible cultural heritage resources can be digitally presented, interactively experienced, and creatively transformed in college and university classrooms, and address the problems of limited presentation forms, insufficient interaction, and the difficulty of transforming cultural knowledge into creative practice in the digital teaching of intangible cultural heritage in higher education. The representational, interactive, and compositional meanings of visual grammar were first used as the design basis to clarify functional requirements of the system in terms of artifact form and decorative pattern presentation, student interaction, and multimodal information organization. Photogrammetry, mesh simplification, and Unity-based augmented reality integration were then adopted to complete the lightweight reconstruction of Cizhou kiln artifact models and the development of an AR platform. On this basis, a digital teaching system for intangible cultural heritage in higher education was designed, and the teaching experience was preliminarily evaluated through questionnaires and open-ended feedback. The results showed that the system could run stably in common college and university teaching environments and support three-dimensional display, cultural explanation, and interactive creation of Cizhou kiln artifacts. Feedback from the workshop indicated that participants gave relatively positive evaluations in terms of knowledge acquisition, interactive experience, cultural identification, and creative practice, suggesting that the platform had certain feasibility in improving short-term learning experience and willingness to participate in creative activities. This study integrates the visual grammar theory, lightweight AR technology, and university-level intangible cultural heritage teaching tasks, forming a teaching application path that combines cultural cognition, interactive experience, and creative practice. It provides a low-cost and easy-to-deploy practical reference for introducing Cizhou kiln and similar intangible cultural heritage resources with distinctive forms and decorative patterns into college and university classrooms.
