Abstract
To investigate the application of virtual reality (VR) technology in adolescent stress management systems and address stress accumulation and depressive tendencies caused by adolescents' underutilization of school-based stress-relief facilities, the work aims to develop a VR stress relief system based on the Stress Recovery Theory (SRT), to facilitate stress recovery and mental health enhancement of adolescents through virtual environmental exposure. Focus group interviews combined with the Kano model were adopted to identify the adolescents' functional requirements for the VR system. Based on the requirement analysis results, the SRT's triple mechanisms of physiological stress, cognitive stress (theoretical supplement), and emotional stress were integrated to construct a VR system incorporating interactive modules and multisensory recovery scenarios. A controlled experiment was conducted with 60 adolescent participants (aged 10-19), employing electrocardiogram (ECG) data and psychological scales for multidimensional measurement and analysis. The experimental group demonstrated significantly superior outcomes to the control group in physiological regulation, cognitive recovery, and positive emotional arousal (P < 0.05). The SRT-based VR system effectively alleviates adolescents' stress, providing an innovative approach for campus psychological services. Future research should focus on the development of personalized VR interventions tailored to specific student subgroups.
