Generational Evolution of Design Methods from a Global Perspective

摘要

目的 不同历史阶段涌现的设计方法呈现出鲜明的代际特征。本文旨在系统回溯并比较各代设计方法的形成背景与核心特征,揭示其演进逻辑与内在张力,为理解当代设计方法的多元并存状态及新兴的“设计研究史”领域的理论建构提供整体性视角。方法 采用文献分析方法,对第一至第四代设计方法的理论基础、方法特征与代表性研究进行对比梳理并在此基础上综合当前设计研究前沿,讨论正在建构中的第五代设计方法。结论 研究表明,第一代设计方法(20世纪50年代末至60年代)以设计的理性化与科学化为核心;第二代设计方法(20世纪70年代)将设计理解为参与性与争论性的社会过程;第三代设计方法(20世纪80年代至21世纪初)转向关注设计中的“人”,涵盖设计师的认知实践与用户的认知与行为;第四代设计方法(21世纪初以来)呈现出以体验驱动、生成式共创为特征并逐步走向系统性与超学科整合。在此基础上,本文提出第五代设计方法正处于建构之中,其核心转向体现在以人类长期福祉与繁荣为设计目标、引入多主体与超越人类视角,以及在人机协同背景下强调人类设计师的判断力、鉴赏力与责任意识。

Abstract

Design methods that emerged across different historical periods exhibit distinct generational paradigms. The work aims to systematically trace back and compare the formation background and core characteristics of various generations of design methods, and reveal their evolution logic and internal tensions, so as to provide an overall perspective for understanding the coexistence of multiple contemporary design methods and the theoretical construction of the emerging field of "design research history". By literature analysis, the theoretical basis, methodological characteristics and representative research of the first to the fourth generation design methods were compared and sorted out. On this basis, the current design research frontiers were integrated to discuss the fifth-generation design method that is currently under construction. The analysis showed that the first generation of design methods, emerging in the late 1950s and 1960s, sought to rationalize and scientize design; the second generation, developed mainly in the 1970s, reframed design as a participatory and argumentative process; the third generation, spanning the 1980s to the early twenty-first century, shifted attention toward human-centered approaches, focusing on the cognition and behavior of both designers and users; and the fourth generation, from the early twenty-first century onward, is characterized by experience-driven and generative co-creation, and is gradually moving towards systematic and interdisciplinary integration. Building on these trajectories, the fifth generation of design methods, still under construction, is unfolding along multiple dimensions, including an explicit orientation toward long-term human well-being and flourishing, an expansion beyond exclusively human-centered perspectives, and, in the context of human-AI collaboration, an increasing emphasis on the cultivation of human designers' judgment, connoisseurship, and sense of responsibility.

Although Peter Jones also summarized the four generations of design methods in tables in his paper, there are two distinct differences. On the one hand, the division of stages, theoretical foundations, methodological features, representative figures and key terms of the four generations of design methods summarized in this paper are all different from those in Peter Jones' work; on the other hand, there are still some inaccuracies and contradictions in the aforementioned paper of Peter Jones.Readers may make their own comparisons, as referenced in [4].
